Reactive scattering of water group ions on ice surfaces with relevance to Saturn's icy moons

چکیده
Collisions of hyperthermal water group ions with ices are known to occur in astrophysical environments, for example, solar wind-comet interactions and moon-magnetosphere (at Saturn Jupiter), yet their effect on surface gaseous composition is little understood. Here, we report molecular dynamics simulations water-group molecules impacting water-ice surfaces using the ReaxFF reactive force fields describe bond breaking forming processes dynamically during collision events. Simulation conditions chosen relevance Saturn's moons Dione Rhea. At impact velocities 10–35 kms−1 (8 102 eV O), find that projectiles undergo Eley-Rideal reactions ice form O2, HO2, H2O2. a 45o angle incidence OO bonded products tend embed within few layers surface. Smaller angles lead formation some oxygen promptly rebounds from ~3 kinetic energy. Impact velocity, incidence, hydrogenation impactor strongly influence O2 formation, yield peaking at 19% atomic impactors 20 kms−1. Notably, this reaction relatively temperature independent proceeds hydrogen rich pristine ice, where radiolysis hindered. This mechanism production low energy impacts may contribute exospheres Jupiter's icy moons, ion fluxes large.

Physisorption of Co2 on Non-ice Materials of Relevance to Icy
Introduction: CO 2 has been detected in the surfaces of several of the Galilean and Saturnian satellites [1-6]. However, it's physical state is poorly understood. On the Galilean satellites the CO 2 that is detected is bound to, or trapped within, the non-ice materials preventing it from sublimating or otherwise escaping from the surface. The non-ice material on surface of Callisto and Ganymede...
متن کاملInteraction of ice binding proteins with ice, water and ions.
Ice binding proteins (IBPs) are produced by various cold-adapted organisms to protect their body tissues against freeze damage. First discovered in Antarctic fish living in shallow waters, IBPs were later found in insects, microorganisms, and plants. Despite great structural diversity, all IBPs adhere to growing ice crystals, which is essential for their extensive repertoire of biological funct...

The application of nuclear reactors for space power and/or propulsion presents some unique challenges regarding the operations and control of the power system. Terrestrial nuclear reactors employ varying degrees of human control and decision-making for operations and benefit from periodic human interaction for maintenance. In contrast, the control system of a space nuclear power plant (SNPP) em...
متن کاملThe Mobile Water Phase on Ice Surfaces
The NMR spectra of finely dispersed ice were investigated. It is shown that the narrow NMR signal from the ice is caused by the mobile water molecules on the ice-gas and iceteflon interfaces. The mobile water phase is in comparatively steady quasi-equilibrium with the strongly defective structure of the bulk ice. The relation of the superficial ice properties with the size of the ice grain is d...
